Explosion on School Hike in Northern Israel Kills 15-Year-Old Boy

An explosion near Neot Mordechai, close to the border with Lebanon, killed a 15-year-old boy and wounded around 20 other people, most of them students and teachers on an organised hike. Israel's military says an initial review points to an unexploded cluster munition left over from earlier fighting.

A school trip in northern Israel ended in tragedy on Monday, when an explosion near the community of Neot Mordechai killed a 15-year-old boy and wounded around 20 other people. Most of those hurt were students and teachers taking part in an organised hike in the area, close to the border with Lebanon.

Helicopters were sent in to evacuate the wounded from the scene. Police bomb disposal teams were also deployed to the area, tasked with finding the source of the blast, as officials worked to establish exactly what had happened and whether any further danger remained at the site of the hike.

Israel's military says an initial review suggests the explosion was likely caused by an unexploded cluster munition left over from earlier fighting. The military stresses that the circumstances are still under investigation, and that its early assessment is not a final conclusion about how the device came to be there or how it was set off.

There has been no claim of a new attack in connection with the explosion. Officials are asking the public not to spread unverified information while the inquiry runs, as investigators continue their work at the scene and bomb disposal teams complete their search for the source of the blast.

For now, the confirmed facts are limited: one boy is dead, around 20 people were wounded and evacuated by helicopter, and the explanation offered by the military so far points to a leftover munition rather than a fresh strike. The investigation will determine whether that early assessment holds, and officials have given no indication of when the inquiry is expected to conclude.
