European Union Adds Nearly 1,600 New Sanctions Listings on Russia

European Union foreign ministers adopted nearly 1,600 new sanctions listings aimed at Russia's military industrial complex on Monday. The bloc's foreign policy chief, Kaja Kallas, called it the single largest expansion of the sanctions list since the war began.

The European Union widened its pressure campaign on Russia on Monday, as the bloc's foreign ministers adopted nearly 1,600 new sanctions listings aimed at Russia's military industrial complex. The listings mark a substantial step-up in the number of names added to the sanctions list in a single move.

Kaja Kallas, the European Union's foreign policy chief, called the move the single largest expansion of the sanctions list since the war began. She said more than half of the new listings connect to the production chain for ballistic missiles, placing the focus squarely on the supply networks behind one category of weapon.

The listings landed as the announced energy ceasefire between Russia and Ukraine continued to fray. Kallas said the European Union welcomes a ceasefire when it holds, but added that there is no sign yet that Russia will stick to it, a judgement echoed by other European leaders on Monday.

French President Emmanuel Macron said he had seen no evidence over the previous 48 hours that Russia was respecting the ceasefire. On the ground, Ukraine's state energy company Naftogaz says Russian strikes hit its gas production facilities in the Kharkiv region overnight, damaging critical equipment at the sites.

Moscow, for its part, has rejected a proposed 60-day ceasefire and says it wants a comprehensive peace deal instead. With the two sides far apart on the terms for even a temporary pause, the European Union's latest package signals that, for now, economic pressure remains the bloc's main instrument while the fighting and the arguments over a ceasefire both continue.
