Zizou Bergs Stuns Second Seed Carlos Alcaraz at the Shanghai Masters
Zizou Bergs of Belgium beat Carlos Alcaraz 7-5, 7-6 in Shanghai on Monday, in the biggest win of his career. With Alcaraz out and Jannik Sinner absent through injury, Alexander Zverev is confirmed as the year-end world number one.
The Shanghai Masters produced its biggest shock so far on Monday, as Zizou Bergs of Belgium beat Carlos Alcaraz 7-5, 7-6. The result was described on the day as the biggest win of Bergs' career, and it removed one of the tournament's leading names from the draw in straight sets.
Alcaraz arrived in Shanghai as the second seed, and in form. He had won the Japan Open just last week, a run that made his early exit in Shanghai all the more unexpected. Instead, it was Bergs who took the first set 7-5 and then closed out the second set in a tiebreak, 7-6, to complete the upset without needing a deciding set.
Elsewhere in the draw, Stefanos Tsitsipas came from a set down to beat Taylor Fritz, keeping his own run going after dropping the opening set of that match. Daniil Medvedev also advanced on Monday, joining the list of names still standing as the tournament moves deeper into the week.
The wider consequence of the day's results concerns the top ranking. With Alcaraz out of the tournament and Jannik Sinner absent through injury, Alexander Zverev is confirmed as the year-end world number one. Neither of the two players who might have challenged that position will now be able to change the outcome over the remainder of the event.
For Bergs, the win stands on its own terms: a straight-sets victory over the second seed, at one of the biggest tournaments of the season, sealed in a second-set tiebreak. For the Shanghai Masters, it is the result the rest of the draw will be measured against as the remaining matches are played.
