Six-Time French Champions Bordeaux Now Play in the Sixth Tier After a One-Euro Sale

Bordeaux, six-time champions of France, are playing in Regional One this season after failing to find roughly ten million euros, and a court hearing on October 20 will decide whether a twelve-year recovery plan holds.

Bordeaux, six-time champions of France, are playing this season in the sixth tier of French football. The club is now in Regional One in Nouvelle-Aquitaine, the sixth level of the French pyramid, and is largely amateur, with just five professional contracts allowed. It is a fall for a club that lifted the Ligue 1 trophy not that long ago, from European nights to the bottom levels of the domestic game.

The cause was money. Bordeaux could not come up with roughly ten million euros to cover this season and next, plus their debt payments. The French authorities sanctioned them, dropping them into Regional One in Nouvelle-Aquitaine. That sanction left a club of Bordeaux’s size and history starting again in a largely amateur division, with the limits on professional contracts underlining how far and how fast the situation had changed.

Bordeaux were then sold for one euro, a symbolic price, to an American investment group called Park Bench. The group took on the debt, cut it from twenty-six million euros to thirteen million euros, and drew up a twelve-year recovery plan. The one-euro sale did not remove the debt. Instead, the new owners took it on at the reduced figure, with the long recovery plan setting out the route they intend to follow from here.

The way back now runs through a courtroom. Bordeaux are back before the commercial court on October the twentieth, where a judge has to ratify that recovery plan. If it holds, the rebuild starts from the bottom of the pyramid. If it does not, the warning was stark: clubs have disappeared for less. Everything now rests on that hearing and on whether the plan presented to the court is allowed to stand.

The story was presented as a cautionary tale, and as a warning for every big club that thinks the money never runs out. Bordeaux’s past success offered no protection once the club could not find the money to cover the seasons ahead and the debt payments that were due. A six-time champion now faces a rebuild from Regional One, largely amateur, with a court decision still to come before that rebuild can properly begin.
