Guardians Complete Historic Comeback to Win Division Series Over White Sox

Cleveland blanked the Chicago White Sox 2-0 on Saturday night to win the division series three games to two, after dropping the first two games at home, and set up a trip to Tampa Bay.

Cleveland completed a comeback for the ages on Saturday night. The Guardians blanked the White Sox two to nothing to win the division series three games to two, after dropping the first two games at home. A series that had begun with Cleveland facing elimination in every remaining game ended with a shutout, a single scoring swing, and a pitching performance that took over the decisive fifth game from the early innings onward.

Gavin Williams struck out twelve over five and two-thirds innings, tying the franchise postseason record. The Cleveland staff's twenty-one strikeouts set a record for a nine-inning postseason game. The only scoring came on Jose Ramirez's two-run homer in the fourth inning, and those two runs were enough. Chicago produced no runs against Williams or the pitchers who followed him, and the White Sox season ended without a breakthrough in the final game of the series.

The scale of the turnaround places Cleveland in rare company. The Guardians are just the eleventh team in ninety-six tries to win a best-of-five series after losing the first two games, and the first to do so since 2017. The result also keeps a long title wait in focus: Cleveland's title drought stretches back to 1948 and is the longest in the majors, a history that now follows the team into the next round.

The reward is a trip to Tampa. The American League Championship Series was set to start on Monday night, with the Rays hosting Cleveland. Tampa Bay planned to start Drew Rasmussen, who took a no-hitter into the eighth inning in the division series opener against the Yankees. The Rays swept New York, have had three days of rest, and went five and one against Cleveland during the season, giving the rested home team a strong recent record in the matchup.
