Real Madrid Score Three Times From Corners in Seven Minutes to Beat Roma 4-3
Roma led 3-1 with seven minutes to play in Rome — then Madrid scored from three straight corners, Rüdiger volleying the winner against his former club, on a record 78-goal matchday.
Real Madrid produced an extraordinary late comeback to beat Roma 4-3 at the Stadio Olimpico on Wednesday night, scoring three goals from corners in seven minutes after trailing 3-1 with the match almost over. The win lifts Jose Mourinho's side to eighth in the Champions League table and leaves Roma twenty-fifth.
Roma struck first, Marten de Roon putting the hosts ahead after twenty minutes. Kylian Mbappe levelled five minutes later on a landmark night for the Frenchman — his one hundredth Champions League appearance, making him, at twenty-seven, the youngest player ever to reach that mark, taking the record from Lionel Messi. Donyell Malen then scored twice in six minutes early in the second half, and Roma led 3-1 with the Olimpico rocking.
Then came the corners. In the eighty-third minute, Carlos Espi turned the ball in after Endrick's header had been parried. Two minutes later, Endrick headed in the equaliser himself from an Arda Guler corner. And in the ninetieth minute, Antonio Rüdiger — a former Roma player — volleyed in the winner at the back post, again from a Guler delivery, to complete one of the great European comebacks.
Madrid's was not the only drama of the night. Wednesday's nine games produced forty-six goals: Aston Villa beat Fenerbahce 6-0, Liverpool won 6-3 at LASK with a Bradley Barcola hat-trick, Feyenoord edged Como 3-2, Real Betis beat Porto 3-2, Shakhtar Donetsk beat AEK Athens 3-1, Stuttgart won 3-0 at Slovan Bratislava, and Bodo Glimt beat Borussia Dortmund 1-0 in Norway.
Across the full matchday — including Tuesday's shocks, Viking's 3-3 draw with Bayern Munich and Club Brugge's 4-3 win at Inter, where Nicolo Tresoldi scored a hat-trick — seventy-eight goals were scored in eighteen games, a new Champions League record for a single matchday.
