Ronaldo Remains Provisionally Suspended as Portugal Disciplinary Case Continues

There is still no verdict in Cristiano Ronaldo's disciplinary case with the Portuguese federation, with the forward's provisional suspension in place and a ban of one to six months possible under the regulations.

Cristiano Ronaldo remains provisionally suspended by the Portuguese Football Federation, with the disciplinary case opened against the Portugal captain after he walked out of the national team camp still awaiting its conclusion. The federation has classified the case as urgent and referred it to its Disciplinary Investigation Committee, whose findings will remain confidential until the investigation ends.

The forty-one-year-old left the Portugal camp during the international window in a dispute with head coach Jorge Jesus over his playing time in the Nations League. Ronaldo had been left on the bench against Norway, and departed after learning he would not start the following match against Denmark. In the games he missed or sat out, Portugal won every one, and his replacement, Goncalo Ramos, scored three times.

Ronaldo has publicly apologised to his teammates and supporters, accepting that his actions must have consequences, and has said he will accept whatever punishment is imposed. He has also insisted he has not retired from international football, promising supporters farewell matches in the future, and returned to club action with Al Nassr, scoring in a 3-0 league win.

Under the federation's disciplinary regulations, a player who abandons or fails to appear without justification at a national team activity can be sanctioned with a suspension of one to six months, in addition to a fine. Reports in Portugal note that because Ronaldo has admitted fault, any ban could be reduced by half, making a range of fifteen days to three months the realistic outcome. No final punishment has been announced.
