Hurricane Simon, Category Four, Skirts Mexico's Pacific Coast by Puerto Vallarta

Hurricane Simon, a Category Four storm with winds of 130 miles per hour, skirted Mexico's Pacific coast, with warnings in place including Puerto Vallarta, up to 30 inches of rain warned of, and a serious landslide risk.

Hurricane Simon, a Category Four storm, skirted Mexico's Pacific coast with winds of one hundred thirty miles per hour. Hurricane warnings stretched from Punta San Telmo to El Roblito, including Puerto Vallarta, where the airport is closed through Monday morning. Mexico's president has urged residents across four states to shelter until officially cleared, while the weather service warns of up to thirty inches of rain and a serious landslide risk along the affected coast.

The California coast was dealing with a different storm's aftermath. On Sunday, the near-record high tide from Rachel pushed surf into already damaged beachfront homes, and Long Beach extended evacuation warnings along the peninsula, restricted car access to residents, and rerouted the marathon. The mayor notes this is the region's third hurricane impact in six weeks. Rachel's remnants are pushing inland, with flash flood threats across California, Nevada, Arizona and Utah, extending the risk well beyond the shoreline that took the first damage.

Further east, the death toll from Isaias has risen to four, two each in Florida and Alabama. Around six hundred thousand customers were still without power on Saturday evening, though utilities aim to have ninety-five percent restored by the end of Monday. The storm's remnants brought heavy rain and isolated tornado risk to the Carolinas and the mid-Atlantic on Sunday, keeping severe weather in the forecast for areas far from where Isaias first struck.

Other severe weather was reported in the Pacific and in Nepal. In the Pacific, Typhoon Nolo has dissipated without making landfall, while Koguma is now a typhoon east of Japan's Ogasawara Islands, though no landfall is forecast. In Nepal, a landslide dammed the Budhi Gandaki river early on Sunday, sending a surge of mud and debris downstream. Five people are missing, dozens of houses were swept away, and the army airlifted dozens to safety, with evacuations underway along several rivers.
